Assigners’ Notes

GLBOC Update 05/29/2026 – Address concerns with the new association

Steve Muenzer and I want to address something with all of you that has come up and want to be clear with where we are from a assigning standpoint with hoops and how it pertains to both of us being part of the new MHSAA basketball association the Great Lakes Basketball Officials Consortium.

We ENCOURGAGE and HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you join a association that you feel will give you the best opportunities to gain training and develop as basketball officials which also includes mentorship, observation and feedback. We have not nor will ever try to steer you into joining a certain association or not join a certain association.

As for assignments Steve and I look to put the right officials in the right games and one of the big factors we look too in making these assignments is simple. Are you working in the off season to take your skills to another level and improve? That could be from camps, to working scrimmages, to attending your preferred association meetings where they are properly teaching MHSAA Approved Mechanics, and also using the NFHS rules book and case book as there guidance and properly teaching rules changes and points of emphasis for example.

The more boxes you check with your offseason time and effort will not go unnoticed and vice versa if you are not putting in the time.

Training never stops from the officials who have worked 25 years and worked many state finals to the brand new officials. We can never stop learning and gaining skills and developing.

In closing Steve and I care about all of you and want to help you  achieve  your goals and we strongly feel forming this new association and whoever decides to join will go a long way in this. We believe in this new association and are investing time, energy and all resources into our membership as we believe a basketball only association is sorely needed at this time. All training material we produce, create and develop will be available to Members Only as we move forward. For a small $30 investment per year it will be the best money you spend.

It is a great time to be a basketball official in this area with the cooperation that Steve and I have from a assigning standpoint and having the opportunities for even more advanced and elite training being offered to all of you through this newly formed group.

Thank you and please reach out with any questions.
