Basketball Uniforms & Gear Recommendations

This page will guide you in purchasing your basketball uniforms and gear, from getting started to veterans. Our Shop Online page contains a list of MHSAA partners and vendors frequently used by MHSAA basketball officials. No one is obligated to use these vendors and may choose to purchase their uniforms and gear elsewhere. NO ONE is permitted to supersede the basketball uniform and gear requirements defined in the MHSAA Offiicals Guidebook and Policy Manual (page 10 & 11).

Uniform – Basketball Shirt

Correct Call Officiating Outfitters (CCOO) is an official partner of the MHSAA for providing dye sub MHSAA logo to the chest. Optional, but highly recommend purchasing these shirts as it looks nice, clean, and professional. The MHSAA no longer provides emblems as part of their registration, however they can still be requested and attached (sewed, pin) to a basketball shirt if purchase basketball shirts elsewhere. We recommend purchasing at least two (2) shirts to swap out when one gets dirty (sweat, stains, or tear), particularly if you are working many games in a week.

Uniform – Basketball Jacket

An all black jacket is required and is only worn during the pregame warm ups. It is optional to purchase a black jacket with the MHSAA sub-dye logo. The black jacket does not require an MHSAA emblem, however recommended.

Pants – Required

Black pants, beltess is required (no belt or belt loops). Choosing which fit (athletic, tapered, or modern) is desired is a personal preference. Check out this article that helps you determine which style is a best fit for you.

Shoes – Required

Predominately all black running shoes is requied. We cannot stress the importance of choosing the right shoes for you. Quality, comfort, and stress-relief shoes is essential for not only looking your best, but protects you from joint (knee, back, ankles, feet) issues with the result of constant running, stop and start, and turns.

Socks – Required

Black socks is required, crew or over the calves is a personal preference. NO ankle socks. It is best you have a number of pairs to get you through the week and through the season. Aside from shoes eventually breaking down, socks are the most frequent item of your uniform that does not last.

Whistles & Lanyards – Required

The Fox-40 Classic whistle is the most popular and recommended. It is a matter of preference to have one with a cushioned mouth grip. Whistle must be all black.

Break away lanyards is strongly recommended. Recommend you purchase at least two (2) whistles and lanyards.

Shirt Stays – Optional

Shirt stays is what keeps your uniform (shirt) tucked, giving you a professional and fit look. What you use is a matter of personal preference. Some use the thigh wraps (suspenders), others use a flex belt. Another alternative is to wear compression pants or compression shorts and tuck the shirt inside the waist band.

Under Apparel – Optional

Compression pants is a matter of personal preference used to keep your leg muscles warm.

Black undershirts while optional, it is strongly recommended as it will keep your sweat stains from soaking into your shirt uniform.

Travel Bag – Required

A travel bag is a necessity for carrying your uniform and gear to your games. What size and style is a matter of personal preference. Some use a “gym bag”, others use a luggage bag.

Accessories – Optional

Basketball (inflatable) needles is recommended and should be placed in your basketball jacket. There will be many times during the season you will encounter an over inflated basketball.
